Robert L. (Bob) Ferguson has more than 50 years of experience in the field of nuclear energy and managing nuclear waste. He is a former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Programs within the U.S. Department of Energy, and former Managing Director for the Washington Public Power Supply System (now Energy Northwest). He is responsible for building the Fast Flux Test Facility, a government test reactor for the Breeder Reactor Program, and the Columbia Generating Station, a commercial nuclear reactor still in operation on the Hanford Site in eastern Washington.
On February 25, 2010, Bob and two colleagues from Richland, Washington, filed a lawsuit against President Barack Obama and Secretary of Energy Steven Chu to stop them from violating the Nuclear Waste Policy Act to terminate and dismantle the Yucca Mountain deep geologic nuclear waste repository in Nevada, and a second lawsuit against the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and its former chairman Gregory Jaczko for illegally stopping the NRC’s review of the license application that would have determined whether or not the Yucca Mountain was a safe and suitable site for a nuclear waste repository. His book, The Cost of Deceit and Delay, is the story of how ordinary citizens can hold their government leaders accountable to the law.
